Bevill State Holds Open House for Renovated Clem Gym

The home of Bevill State Basketball has undergone a much-needed renovation and invited members of the community to tour the upgraded facilities at Glen R. Clem Memorial Gymnasium.

The project, originally announced in the fall of 2023 by Bevill State president Joel Hagood, reached its completion recently, ahead of Tuesday night’s conference showdown with Wallace-Selma.

On Monday, Bevill State held an open house to introduce the new-look Clem Gym, complete with features such as a mural commemorating decades at Bevill State Basketball, video board, Blue Tie suite and weight room – a 6.5 million-dollar project.

“I don’t have to tell anyone in our community that it was past time to upgrade this venue, which has been the home to the Rebels and the Bears since the 1960’s. With the Lord’s help, and through the tireless work of our legislators: Greg Reed and Matt Woods, and scores of ladies and gentlemen throughout our area and state intent on seeing this project come to fruition, Glen R. Clem Memorial Gymnasium is modern and gorgeous facility that our players, students and fans can be proud of,” Hagood said. “So much tradition that was built into what today is Bevill State Basketball took place here in Clem Gym – this renovation means that tradition will continue to bigger and better heights.”

Special guest Angela Clem Harbin, daughter of legendary coach and facility namesake Coach Glen Clem, recalled several years of watching her father coach basketball in the gym and expressed her pride in the new renovations.

“I grew up in this gym and spent so many years watching my father coach – both as a student and later working in the office. I loved my father – this is a wonderful moment in time for our entire family,” Harbin said. “The transformation of this gymnasium is incredible; on behalf of our family we thank everyone who has been involved. We are honored and proud and we know our father would be so proud of it as well.”

The new Glen R. Clem Gymnasium will be officially dedicated in a pre-game ceremony on Tuesday night prior to tip-off at 6p.m.

WJLX will broadcast the game and the pre-game ceremony on its social media platforms, on the WJLX app and at www.wjlx1015fm.com
